Catahoula leopard dog names

There are 10 known breeds of catahoula leopard dog, all members of the Catahoula group of dog breeds. In 2009, the breed had a population of less than 1,000 dogs in the U.S. and a total world population of only 4,000 to 5,000 dogs.

The Catahoula leopard dog breed originated from a few early individuals of unknown breeds who were bred from the French hunting dog breeds, mainly the Basenji and the Tosa. The breed was probably bred by Basenjis and Tosa dog fanciers in the U.S. and Mexico. The breed got its name by mixing the word "Catahoula" from the Tosa and "leopard" from the Basenji. A few years later, the breed split into two distinct groups: the "short coat" and the "long coat". The "long-coated" Catahoula leopard dog were originally larger than their short-coated cousins, but the size difference is so small that they cannot be distinguished by size alone. In the early 1990s, the Catahoula leopard dog breed gained in popularity and by 2005 the breed had a population of about 2,000 dogs in the U.S. Today, the population of Catahoula leopard dogs in the U.S. is about 9,000.

The Catahoula leopard dog has a very short double coat with a harsh undercoat. It is usually very hard and curly, as well as sparsely coated with very little undercoat. It usually has a coat length of 3/4 inch to 7/8 of an inch. The head is usually covered in a medium-length, soft, silky hair and has large, round, and alert eyes. The breed is of medium size, but it can be small, medium, or large depending on the dog's individual build. They weigh 20–50 ,lbs.

The Catahoula leopard dog breed is quite similar to the Shih Tzu, with one notable difference. Although both breeds share similar coat characteristics, the Catahoula leopard dog coat is extremely harsh compared to the Shih Tzu's soft, curly hair. It is important to note that the coats of the Catahoula leopard dog are meant to protect the dog from the harsh environments that it must live in.

The Catahoula leopard dog is one of the most health-conscious breeds. Their coat is hardy and durable and is naturally resistant to sun damage. Because they are naturally more energetic than many breeds, they are prone to a number of issues associated with dog health including osteoarthritis, bloat, and kidney stones.

Catahoula leopard dogs are very trainable and can be trained almost like a German Shepherd. While training a catahoula leopard dog should begin with basic obedience commands, including sit, stay, down, and come, there are numerous obedience classes offered for this breed, with varying levels of difficulty.

Catahoula leopard dogs are the active dogs of the Shih Tzu family and need to be trained to keep themselves busy while at home. These dogs are naturally inclined to be an independent dog and require more exercise than many breeds.

Breed standard

The Catahoula leopard dog breed standard was adopted by the Catahoula Leopard Dog Club of America and published in 2009. The standard is divided into three major sections, type, coat, and temperament.
