Jack onofrio dog shows

A dog show is an organized competition between dogs of different breeds that judge judges will award the dog that performs the best for each breed. All-breed shows, where dogs of different breeds are judged agnst one another, are also held.

The dogs that compete in dog shows are judged in conformation, obedience, agility, and other performance events. Dogs can compete with other dogs of the same breed or with dogs of a different breed. The purpose of conformation shows is to demonstrate the breed standard of the dog in a structured event. The purpose of obedience trials is to demonstrate the dog's ability to perform a specific task or set of tasks when told to do so by the judge. Agility trials let the dog demonstrate his ability to perform a quick sequence of various tasks while moving swiftly through a gauntlet of obstacles at the end of an obstacle-laden course. In the performance events, the dogs are judged on their obedience to the handler, their ability to perform various activities, and on how closely their behavior resembles that of a working dog.

The AKC started conformation judging in the late 1920s. The AKC invited its member clubs to offer "judged shows" to the public. The first AKC-sanctioned breed-specific conformation shows were hosted in January 1930 in New York City, at Madison Square Garden. Since that time, the AKC has held many different types of shows, including specialty shows, all-breed shows, and shows dedicated to a particular breed or breeds.

History

The modern day dog show was founded by William Schervier. He was an American dog breeder and exhibitor in New York City. Schervier was the president of the New York Kennel Club from 1925 to 1926, and was also the president of the American Kennel Club in 1927. In 1926, Schervier organized the first official dog show in America, the American Kennel Club show in Madison Square Garden. The American Kennel Club offered shows to the public from 1928 to 1933. The American Kennel Club was organized in April of that year to serve the needs of the breed clubs in the United States. Schervier's shows featured many different breeds, and were open to any breed. The American Kennel Club invited the breed clubs to hold their own shows in the years that followed. These shows would often be held in the winter in order to accommodate a larger crowd of attendees.

The AKC was organized to help the breed clubs of the United States by hosting sanctioned shows. The AKC began hosting shows in January of 1927. In 1934, the AKC began sanctioning the first purebred dog show. This was the very first conformation show that the AKC sanctioned. The American Kennel Club has held shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City since 1926. The AKC has held many different types of shows, including specialty shows, all-breed shows, and shows for a particular breed or breeds.

Events

The purpose of a dog show is to judge the dogs in different categories. Some of the different events that are performed at dog shows are:

Conformation shows

A conformation show is an event that judges award the dog that best matches the standard of that breed. Dogs that are judged at a conformation show will be judged for the characteristics listed in the standard, which include things such as the head, body, and limbs. The dog will be judged for its general appearance, as well as its breed standard. The dogs are evaluated on the following:

Weight and Size

General Appearance

Texture

Shape of the Head

Color

Eyes

Ears

Neck

Chest

Appearance

The appearance of a dog can influence judges who will award the dog, but the exact characteristics that are looked at will vary depending on the conformation event that is being judged. At a conformation show, the dogs are judged on the features listed in the standard.

Size and Weight

At a conformation show, the dog is assessed for the size of his body and his weight. The dog will be assessed for its breed standard, and it is evaluated for how well its body matches the description in the standard. The dog's size is measured by:

Height: The distance from the ground to the dog's shoulder is measured, and then compared to the breed standard. This is the most common way that size is assessed at dog shows.

Weight: This is the second most common way that size is assessed at dog shows. A scale is used to weigh the dog, and then the dog is compared to the breed standard.

Head

The head of a dog is assessed at a conformation show. This includes:

Head type: This describes how round the dog's head is. For example, a flat head indicates that the dog's head is rectangular in shape, and a round head indicates that the dog's head is more round in shape. The head shape of the dog is also compared to the breed standard.

Skull type: The size, shape, and thickness of the dog's skull is examined. A large, square skull indicates that the dog's skull is very rectangular in shape. A medium skull indicates that the dog's skull is somewhat rectangular in shape. A small, round skull indicates that the dog's skull is round in shape.
