Is play doh toxic to dogs?

I have a 11 year old chow who will not eat food that I cook. She will eat her normal food if I make it. It is a brand I had been using for several months and I was giving her a piece of a rawhide treat. About a week ago I gave her a piece of a kong and she ate that and the rawhide but she stopped eating the kong.

She has been fine the last three days so I thought she had just lost interest in it. I also gave her a doh yesterday, she ate it and seemed normal so I put her down for her nap.

After she went to sleep she started vomiting and has not been herself since. She was up for 3 hours and when she got up she was vomiting. I called the vet and sd I thought it was doh. He sd the doh was fine and he could not figure out why she was vomiting. So then I called my husband who is a vet tech and he agreed it was doh.

I still thought she had just lost interest in it. I was very upset because I had given her something that I know is very good for her and I was worried it would hurt her. She ate the rawhide last week and the doh today so I thought she was fine.

Since I know it is doh, what do you think I should do about the doh. Is it safe for her to eat it?

I am just worried that since she has vomited, it might be a sign of worse things to come.

Hi,

Yes, the Doh is fine but that is normal when your dog eats something that is known to be very hard to digest and have that much gas. It's fine to have it in a bowl as long as your dog can see and smell it. But it is very unsafe to feed it in a treat that has meat or meat byproducts in it.

I think I would give the doh up to your husband and let him treat her. He is an expert so you can trust him.

I hope you get to feeling better soon and have a good day,

Betsy

I just don't understand how this is a good thing for her. She is fine for now but I don't want to have anything to do with it. The vet sd he would not take the doh and would call her if she got any worse but he sd if she ate the doh and was okay the next day, that he was okay with it and if it was bad she could eat it.

It is not safe to eat the Doh. It is basically the same stuff as liver. Dogs do not metabolize it well and it is very dangerous.

I gave my dog doh a long time ago and she just vomited it back up, which is exactly what happened with me.

If you have any more questions about this, just ask and I will try to answer.

I am not sure why your dog is vomiting after eating the doh. It may have been bad for her but it is really not worth the risk.

I would not feed her the doh agn and would let your vet know.

I hope you have a good day,

Betsy

Thank you for your help. The vet says that she may have eaten something that upset her.

I did put it in a bowl so she could see and smell it. We did the same for a long time with the rawhide but she has never done that before with it. I do not understand why she is doing this. It is almost like a gag reflex or something.

I have stopped giving her the doh but I feel bad because I know she is very sick and I was hoping it would help her.

I am wondering if she ate something bad. I just don't know what it could be.

Thank you agn for your help.
