Dog ate fish bones from New Year's feast: Why didn't the family report the incident?

Last Updated: August 25, 2017 at 2:41 AM

(CNN) - A dog ate fish bones from a family's New Year's Eve feast, and when the family woke up the next day, they found a dead cat nearby.

It didn't register with them at the time, the family says, but what the dog was doing wasn't a coincidence.

The family owned the dog, and they thought it was safe to bring it into their house because the dog had never bitten them before. But when it jumped on the dining table, the cat and the dog got into a fight, the family says.

The family says it doesn't know if the dog had a bone in its mouth, but the dog is usually allowed to have bones in its mouth as long as it doesn't hurt someone.

The dog's owner was not aware that it had gotten into a fight with the cat. And since the family didn't know about the cat, they didn't report the dog's actions, the family says.

"I didn't want to get the dog off the table and leave him there. Because it was in my house. And I didn't want him getting into trouble, getting bit again," the family's youngest daughter said.

The family says the dog is too big for them to keep in their home. They say they're afraid to leave it in their yard or in a neighbor's yard because they're worried about being attacked by other dogs.

"I just think it's such a shame because, of course, if this had happened when we had children, it would be way more serious," the daughter said. "But it's not so much an issue for us. We're just really upset that they would do this. Because we didn't ask for this."

"They're all good neighbors. They're all fine people," the daughter said. "I mean, the dog, we know, was very small. But they never even considered that."

So, the family says they called the sheriff's department to file a report. The family says the sheriff's office came and took their complaint but they did not do anything about the dog. The family says they haven't heard anything else from the sheriff's department.

"We just want the dog to be safe. And we want him to go to a home that can take care of him and love him," the daughter said.

The family says they're worried the dog won't get adopted because he's a little older and bigger than other dogs. But they say they think the dog will get adopted if his owners can provide a home and a loving environment for him.

So, what's your take? Is it OK to leave a dog outside without shelter, food or water? Or, is it better to let the dog come in and out to keep him comfortable? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section.
