Golden retriever show dog

The Great Dane Golden retriever is one of the most popular breeds. Its popularity has grown as the gold standard for all large dogs that were used for hunting and herding. The American Kennel Club ranks the Great Dane at number two.

Origin

The Great Dane is from Danish and German breeders who traveled to the United States, settling in the midwest. The breed was brought to Denmark in 1862.

History

A Danish dog breeder, Peter Peterhans, in 1862 created a large dog with short legs and a long, tapering body with the aim to build a guard dog for his farm. The aim was to create a dog that was able to guard sheep and large crops. In 1867, the breed, known as “Danegold”, arrived at the American Kennel Club in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1913, Danegold was officially accepted by the American Kennel Club.

In the 19th century, the Great Dane had a great influence on many dog breeds including: Shetland Sheepdogs, Rottweilers, Samoyeds, Great Pyrenees and Saint Bernards.

Today, the Great Dane Golden retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States.

Description

The Great Dane Golden retriever is a large dog and considered one of the most intimidating breeds. The head is large and heavy and a large, square jaw is noticeable. The face is big and broad with a thick, muscular neck. The ears are large, broad and rounded and the eye color can be blue, brown, black, chocolate or blue-black.

An adult dog of the Great Dane Golden retriever weighs around 50 to 80 lbs. with a short, thick, heavy and strong-boned body. The shoulders are wide and high. The length of the back and loin is long and muscular. The tail is normally curved and carried over the back. The body is generally covered in short, thick, soft, dark-colored hair. The Great Dane Golden retriever may shed a significant amount of hair.

Characteristics

Great Danes are very intelligent and confident dogs. However, they have a very strong sense of self-awareness and independent thinking. They love to play and will never stop with their fun loving personality.

Health Issues

Despite the Great Dane being one of the most common breeds, the health issues that this dog faces are not as common as other dog breeds. Since there are several Great Dane Golden retriever clubs throughout the world, the dog’s health problems are also quite numerous. One of the most common health issues that this dog faces is hip dysplasia.

Life Expectancy

The life expectancy for the Great Dane Golden retriever is around 12 to 14 years.

Training

While the Great Dane Golden retriever is a smart dog and loves playing with their family members, their personality still remains friendly and relaxed, no matter the fact that they are around other people and other animals.
