Are chicken hearts good for dogs?

Hi

Ive read some articles saying that some people give their dogs chicken hearts. Is this safe or do you not recommend this? I know that most dogs cannot eat chicken and I know that it can cause an adverse reaction. I just want to know if a small amount can be given.

My wife and I both have dogs. We do have to keep them inside because of the weather. I would not give them anything that could be a choking hazard. My dogs are not finicky eaters and they have not been allergic to any thing that has made them sick. I dont know if the chicken heart thing is true but if you think that it can be safe, I would not hesitate to give it to them.

I know that they would have to eat them before they got too old, because the veins are not developed enough to hold the blood so that they could eat them.

But I do not know if that means that they would not have any problems with it if they ate the chicken heart?

I would not hesitate to give them that kind of food if it is considered safe, but I would give them a small portion at a time to try. I would not give it dly. I do not want to give them a problem.

But they are going to have to eat them at some point and they might as well eat chicken hearts.

Well for starters you have the whole vein system, and they would need to be old enough for the chicken heart system to fully develop. A little bit is probably fine, but if they eat a large amount, they might have a reaction. And as with all things, if you can, do it safely. If you have a dog food product that says that it is good for dogs and can be given raw, do it that way, or at least read the labels so you know what you are feeding them.

Personally I would not feed them something with so much cholesterol in it, but I also do not feed a diet of it, and my dog eats some of the stuff.

A lot of people try to feed raw diets or freeze dried diets to their dogs. There are lots of things that they can put in it and a lot of people have the idea that if it is good for them, it must be good for their dogs. But not always. And it is not always healthy.

Well, chicken hearts are definitely not as safe to give to dogs as something that you have grown, like vegetables, because if the chicken heart contns any chemicals or preservatives they would not necessarily pass into the dog. They would pass through, but if you were going to give them the heart, you could at least feed it the way that you would cook the chicken. Chicken hearts are a very bland thing, so that you could give them some seasoning in the form of salt and pepper, but that is all.

The idea that you could feed chicken hearts to dogs came from people who did not have dogs and thought that chickens had hearts that were too large to fit into a dog, so they just fed them raw chicken hearts. But it really is not a good thing to feed dogs at all.

If I think that something is safe to feed my dog, I would give them something like it, so it depends on what you would consider safe to feed your dog. If you think that chicken hearts are safe to feed to dogs, and you know that they can, then give it to them. Just be careful and make sure that you feed them a small portion at a time, and be careful to make sure that you don't feed it for a long period of time. And try to feed them something else in the meantime to keep them from just getting used to it.

Thanks for all the responses. I know that it depends on your dog and its condition. I know some dogs that are finicky eaters and some that are not. So I dont want to feed them something that would harm them. It is true that some dogs cannot eat chicken, but they can eat chicken hearts. I would have to give them the hearts one at a time and be careful to make sure that they don't get too much at one time. They would also need to be old enough for it.

The answer to your question depends on several factors.

Do you know that the heart has no blood? And are they old enough for the chicken heart to be fully developed?

I would feed it to the dog like I would a rabbit. If the dog is a finicky eater, you would have to be careful not to give him too much. But you could feed a small amount at a time and see how he does. If it is not a problem for him, then you could probably start feeding it dly and gradually increase the amount. I would be careful not to give them more than 2 or 3 hearts in one feeding.

But you really have to make sure that you feed them a balanced diet, and be sure to check the labels on all of the dog foods that you buy. Most foods are not suitable for your dog and if you are feeding them a raw diet or a diet of dehydrated dog food, then you should know that. There are foods that are formulated for your dog, but if you buy the food without knowing that the dog food was formulated for dogs, then you are not going to get a balanced diet for your dog.

Do you know that the heart has no blood? And are they old enough for the chicken heart to be fully developed?

Yes, they do have blood. And I know that they need to be old enough to have the veins developed. But it is not
